Growing Up with Indiana

After burgers

In tonight’s game of chase I told Indy I was “turning on the afterburners” to go super fast! She ran around shouting that she was going to turn on her “cheese burgers” to go faster. After hearing me repeat “afterburners” she did a quick correction and turned on her “after burgers”. Usually I run slower after burgers, but hey, I’m old.

It’s in the emphasis

Recent discussion:
Indy: I had free lunches!

Me: Three or free?

Indy: Free! (Holds up 3 fingers)

Me: (teasing) Oh! Free, not FREE!

Indy: I said FREE mommy. You need to listen better.

Lisps

Indy has a lisp and it’s adorable. She has an amazing vocabulary well beyond her age so we are prone to keep letting her lisp and not correct her.  Some favorite words:

  • Callapitter (caterpillar)
  • Pasgetti
  • Nakin
  • Wember (remember)
  • F’s for Th’s: free instead of three, firsty for thirsty
  • B’s for V’s: Silbie instead of Silvie, beber for beaver (Justin jokes ensue)
  • Piggy blanket instead of piggy bank (not a lisp, but definitely cute)
  • Flingo (flamingo)

Language

Indy has had a fever the last few days. While curled up in my arms for a snuggle, Mike asked Indy if she would like some milk or water. She requested warm milk. I followed up with ‘are you sure you don’t want it cold?’ Her response, toned toward the incredulous, was “I already suggested what I wanted to Daddy. Thank you.”

Shut down.

Sharing

Indy just informed me that everyone eats their own breakfasts, individually, without sharing. I mentioned to her that I share my meals all the time, to which she responded: ‘but I don’t share mine. They are mine.’

Ah, that’s the distinction!

No Worries

Last night while getting set up for dinner, I had forgotten to get Indy something and apologized to her. Her response to me was ‘oh, no worries mom’

Hello Kitty moment

Indy has fallen in love with her Hello Kitty dress recently. It’s her go-to outfit 3x this week and is sporting a matching tattoo.

Humbling moment

This week Indy’s school hosted an international fair where each classroom represented a different country. Her classroom highlighted Egypt. We have known about this for a month and have been asking Indy questions about what she’d learned about Egypt, so far there were never any direct answers or any interest in answering, so we assumed it wasn’t sticking much with her. (Although she had come home and informed us of all the continents and that Egypt is on the African continent—impressive!)

So a few days before the fair I pulled a book out called ‘Egyptology’ for Indy to peruse. Mike was flipping through the book when he stopped at a page and pointed to a bust of a woman and said, “a long time ago people used to wear funny hats”, Indy looked at the picture, then at him and stated, “that’s Nefertiti.” Gob struck, Mike laughed, agreed and turned the page and then explained that Egyptians would get buried in “fancy boxes” pointing to a new picture, to which Indy reported that it actually was Tutankhamen. Game over. Kids win. Parents are dumb.
